Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports is a three-tiered system that is designed to help students succeed and focuses on positive behaviors and growth rather than punitive consequences.

-Tier 1: Practices and systems establish a foundation of regular, proactive support while preventing unwanted behaviors. These are school-wide supports. For example, EES uses positive office referrals to highlight student behavior throughout the school community. These can be from teachers to students or from student to student. Referrals are read over the morning announcements in the style of a “shout-out” from the principal who later on delivers a copy of the referral and a treat of the student’s choice to the student.

-Tier 2: Practices and systems that support students who are at risk for developing more serious problem behaviors before they start. This is skill building that helps students benefit from other programs provided at the school

-Tier 3: More intensive and individualized support to improve behavioral and academic outcomes. For example, EES utilizes think sheets which is designed to encourage the student to think on their behavior and acknowledge natural consequences that stem from the chosen behavior. Think sheets also encourage the student to consider alternative choices to their actions that might help them learn and brainstorm growth for the future.
